Tickets Now On Sale for Our “Nacho Average Dinner Dance”!!

Shake your maracas and join us at our annual Dinner Dance and Silent Auction. It’s “Nacho Average Dinner Dance” and will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Bell Canyon Community Center from 6:00 pm until midnight. Dinner prices start at only $40 per person and include:

Dessert

Dancing

Salsa Dancing (lessons included!)
Photo Booth (including a photograph to take home)
Silent Auction and Raffle

For only $55, you can have all of the above PLUS 10 drink tickets and 10 raffle tickets, for a savings of $15!

SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

JSSPTA has several sponsorship opportunities available for the evening of the Dinner Dance:

JUSTICE SPONSOR – $10: Have a colorful Mexican cutout with your name on it to help decorate the dinner dance.
TEACHER/STAFF SPONSOR – $30: Pay for one current staff member or their spouse to attend the dance at no cost (does not include drink tickets). All sponsored dinners will be distributed to staff based on a random drawing that will be open to all current teachers, staff and administrators.
DINNER TABLE SPONSOR - $50: Your name or logo will be displayed on a dinner table centerpiece. Includes five (5) raffle tickets.
BAR SPONSOR – $75: Your name will be prominently displayed at the bar. Includes ten (10) raffle tickets.
POKER TABLE SPONSOR – $100: Your name will be prominently displayed at one of the poker tables. Includes five (5) drink tickets and ten (10) raffle tickets.

SAS Permit Applications Now Being Accepted! Open Enrollment Period Opens Soon.

SAS (SCHOOL FOR ADVANCED STUDIES) PERMITS

Justice Street School is a School for Advanced Studies. We are currently accepting SAS permits for the 2012 – 2013 academic year. If you would like to apply for an SAS permit to attend Justice Street School, please be aware of the following deadlines. They are set by LAUSD and will be strictly enforced.

SAS Application opens: April 9, 2012
SAS Application deadline: May 9, 2012
SAS Notification of applicant deadline: June 8, 2012

You may view the list of SAS schools in Local District 1 and obtain an SAS Permit enrollment form on the LAUSD website.

The SAS permit form must be signed by the Administrator at your current school of attendance (your home school) before you bring it to Justice Street School. Forms will not be accepted after May 9, 2012 under any circumstances.

OPEN ENROLLMENT

Justice Street School will soon start accepting open enrollment applications. We have 50 spots available. If more than 50 prospective students apply to attend Justice Street School under Open Enrollment, a lottery will be held. Prospective students who are not chosen for one of the Open Enrollment spots will be placed on a waiting list in the order in which their names were drawn. For more information about the Open Enrollment process, click here.

If you are planning to participate in the Open Enrollment process for a school that is not your home school, including Justice Street School, please be aware of the following deadlines for this year:

Start date for Open Enrollment: May 7, 2012
Final Open Enrollment Application Date: May 25, 2012
School drawings (when necessary): May 29 – June 1, 2012
Deadline for accepting Open Enrollment transfers (if space remains): Friday, August 31, 2012

Be sure not to miss any of the above deadlines. They are set by the District and will be strictly enforced.

Be sure to order your 2011 – 2012 yearbook! Orders will be accepted through April 13, 2012. Extra yearbooks will not be ordered, and any overruns sent by the publisher will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis in June, with fifth graders getting priority, and the books will be more expensive.

Yearbooks are now $25 for a soft cover and $30 for a hard cover. Add $2 if you’d like Zoom, a 16-page color insert produced by Lifetouch. Order forms are in the Parent Center. Please make checks payable to JSSPTA.

Justice Street School to Earn 2012 California Distinguished School Award!

WE DID IT!!!

Our site evaluation for the 2012 California Distinguished School award on Monday, March 19th was a HUGE success! The evaluation team is highly recommending Justice Street School for this award and we should hear the official word from the California Department of Education in April.

The most impressive thing that stood out to the team was the students. Not only were the kids very friendly, helpful and polite, but they shared in depth details about what they were learning and used academic terms and vocabulary confidently.

The second thing that impressed the team was the complete sense of community – from watching the kids interact with each other and their teachers to seeing parents helping in a variety of ways around the campus and to being a part of the camaraderie between staff members at recess and lunch. They recognized that our school is doing all the right things to prepare the students for the next phase of their educations.

Congratulations to the entire staff and student body for working so hard these past few years to make this opportunity a reality. And thank you to all the parents who pitched in preparing for this day and being tremendously gracious hosts on Monday. Great job everyone!!

Prospective parents are welcome to join us on a school tour to find out why Justice Street School may be the perfect fit for YOUR family. Find out the low-down on how to apply to our school if you live within our boundaries, as well as how to apply through the District’s Open Enrollment and/or SAS permit programs.

You’ll meet our Principal, Jill Frieze, as well as representatives from our active PTA. We’ll share with you how we’ve improved the academic performance of our students over the past few years, as well as some of our plans for the future. We’ll answer ALL your questions and then take you on a tour to see our Computer Lab, Kindergarten and Upper Grade playgrounds, Wonder of Reading Library, Teaching Garden, classrooms and school layout, Parent Center and more.

School tours are scheduled to begin at 8:30 am in our Parent Center on the following dates:

GARDEN DAY – FEBRUARY 18, 2012

Please join us on Saturday, February 18, 2012 between 9:00 am and 12 noon as we work together to make our campus more beautiful. We will finish the Teaching Garden and spruce up the flower beds with bulbs, plants and seeds, and even a mandarin orange tree!

PTA will provide coffee, bagels, doughnuts, juice and snacks for the kids…did we mention coffee??!!

Help Justice Street School through Westfield’s Earning for Learning Program

Justice Street School is participating in the Westfield EARNING FOR LEARNING program. Only 20 schools in the west San Fernando Valley have been chosen to participate. Justice Street School earns points for every person who signs up their email address, as well as for shopping receipts logged by our friends and family. Prizes include Westfield gift cards for our school that we can then use in our fundraising efforts.

There are several ways you can help. First, click on this link and sign up for Westfield’s Shopping Partnership program. Sign up your email and we earn points.

Second: SHOP at Westfield Topanga, Westfield Promenade, or Crate and Barrel. Then go to the Concierge desk at the Westfield Topanga Mall and log your receipts. Justice Street School earns points for every dollar you spend. Plus we earn 1,000 points for every Westfield Gift Card y0u purchase!

Don’t have time to log your receipts? Then drop them in the pink box at the Justice Street School Parent Center and they will be logged for you. (Put your name and child’s room number on the receipts if you need them returned).

New California State Booster Seat Law Effective 1/1/12

In case you haven’t heard the news, effective January 1, 2012, children *MUST* be secured in an appropriate child passenger restraint (safety seat or booster seat) in the back seat of a vehicle until they are at least 8 YEARS OLD or 4′ 9″ in height.

Properly buckling your children in before every trip in your car is critical.

Thousands of children are injured or killed every year by safety seats that are improperly fastened by parents or caretakers. Remember, most collisions occur within a mile of the home – so buckle your child in a safety seat for every trip, no matter how short.

If you’re not confident of how to properly secure your child in a safety seat, contact your local CHP Area Office, and set up an appointment for a lesson. Visit the CHP website for more information on the child restraint laws or to find your local CHP office.
